Ah, work. Something that for many in the mansion changes every night. The men go out and fight and battle. They kick and punch, fire guns, eat lessers, inhale lessers, break bones, and laugh and joke. But one male can no longer do that. Wrath the King. He is permanently ass-attached to his throne trying to make right with all sides of the race. When Rhaine came around her Father decided the best way to keep tabs on the "youngin" was to put her behind a desk with him helping with paperwork. It didn't bother Rhaine doing it, because fact was her Father was blind and couldn't read what was written anyway. Though she did hate not doing more around here. She slept here, ate here, worked here, this mansion was a prison of work and play.
Setting down her cup of coffee on her desk, the redhead yawned and settled herself in her seat. The leather chair creaked on it's wheels, yet Rhaine had to admit it was extremely comfortable. She crossed her legs, making sure her long sweater didn't ride up too short. No one could really see but she decided just to wear her sweater, socks, and leg warmers today. No shorts, no pants, who cared no one was around! Reaching over, she typed in the password on Wrath's computer, then on her own listening to the sounds of both harddrives booting up from sleep mode.
"Let's see..." She spoke to no one in particular, "Another round of requests from the glymera, some reports from Safe Place, investigation results from Vishous regarding internet hacking lessers..." Rhaine leaned her head on her hand as she read everything. Growing bored of reading e-mail subject lines, she turned and pulled a bunch of papers from a stack on her desk. More requests, more to be notarized, stamped and read aloud. Goody. Looking around, Rhaine let her gaze fall all over the gorgeous study, and felt once again trapped.
Wrath entered his study, sensing his daughters presence. "Not working again I see."
He really couldn't see, but he knew she wasn't working. Her mind had drifted off, the air in the room gave it away. Wraths eyes may have been off, but his other senses more then made up for it. "Update me, now."
Wrath sat in his seat, sensing his tone was a bit harsh on her. He really wasn't used to this whole daughter thing, and he had no idea what to work on. Zsadist wasn't much of a help, he was completely wrapped around Nalla's finger. "I'm sorry, can you please give me any updates that there might be?"
He tried to smile, but he felt ridiculous so he went back to being straight faced. He hoped there wouldn't be anything too hectic on his schedule. He needed to get away with Beth. They had been fighting too much and it was all because of this forsaken job his father left him. Why in hell did he have to be the King? He fucking hated it. He missed being able to go out and fight with his brothers.
Rhaine snapped out of her trance the moment Wrath came in, and swallowed as he spoke. Nodding, she cleared her throat and rubbed her palms on her thighs for a second before leaning over. It sure was awkward now, he used to hug her or squeeze her shoulder. Now he treated her like...like an employee only. "Erm...well..." Sighing, she blinked and looked at his computer.
"There's sixteen requests from the glymera. From what I'm seeing most of it are vacation requests using savings accounts from the council instead of personal finances. We have one requesting a Brother come for a birthday party." Rhaine rolled her eyes at that one. Yes, because that's just what Rhage wanted to do in his spare time was go stand like a clown with a pointy hat on for three hours. "There's a report about Mary and Rhage and their adoption proceedings. Safe Place is requesting you sign off on the initial approval."
Leaning back, Rhaine picked up a few papers she'd already printed out. "There's also two reports that V e-mailed you that show..." She trailed off skimming through the words, "Looks like there were two lessers who tried to hack into his computer system but got blocked by the firewall. He's reset everything with new levels of protection incase they got anything through or vice-versa."
Lowering her hands, she glanced over at her Father and blinked a few times. He sure had changed, when they first met he was emotional and very happy. He was kind, kept wanting to hug her and keep her near. But soon after when he and Beth began arguing about her and wanting another young he grew distant. She knew it wasn't because he was not wanting her there, he was just stuck. If he showed favoritism towards his daughter, Beth would be hurt. If he denied Rhaine fatherly comfort, Rhaine would feel hurt. But I guess it was easier to please the shellan than the child sometimes.
"I know you don't want to be here, you can take the night off if you want. I can always respond to all the requests and tell them you need another day."
Wrath looked up as she listed everything off. He sighed and rubbed his eyes under his wrap arounds. "Fucking Safe Place can't just take my official letter with my stamp? It's got to be there fucking paperwork, always. I'm going to have to talk about that with Marissa. Over complicating shit."
He got up, stomping around the room, pacing. "I don't know who wants Rhage for a birthday party but he's busy. We don't do security at parties like that. Fuck that shit... but be nice in the reply... please."
Wrath sighed, thinking about the lesser problem. "Have V keep track of those fuckers. They can't breach the system. If all those civilians knew the lessers knew where they lived, there would be problems, major problems."
Wrath found himself in front of the fireplace. He knew he was there from the smell left from the burning wood that was from the other night. He lifted his hand up and held onto the mantle, leaning against his arm with the weight of his body. "Rhaine, I'm not going to leave you in here. I spent too many nights alone in this room and I don't want anyone going through that. I'm having a hard enough time having you in here at all as I speak."
With his free hand he reached up and rubbed his face. Shit, he hated being King.
"Dad..." Standing up, Rhaine walked over to the fire and stood in front of Wrath. She knew he could tell where she was. "I'm fine with being here alone. To be honest there were a couple of times you stepped out to talk to someone and I got more typing done with my music going than when you were barking commands at me." Reaching up, she put her hand on his forearm and squeezed softly. "You need to go spend time with Beth, and I get that. Besides there's not much more you can do at this point, except for approving or denying vacation trips which can be done any day of the week."
Looking at Wrath's desk, and her little chair at the end, Rhaine blinked a few times trying to stop the view from turning hazy from her tears. He really did sound like he hated having her around now. "Or if it's easier, I could always take a trip myself and leave you and Beth alone here for a few days. Maybe me not being here would make things better?"
She sounded like she felt, she felt like a five year old realizing she was just a nuisance to her family. She hated sounding that way too, she wanted to sound strong and proud and just say 'fuck it, he's my Dad. He wanted me around before so that's how it is" but he was the King. The last thing he needed was more stress. She could always go back to her apartment and stay there. Hell doing so she'd have privacy to see Lhust more. Looking at Wrath once more, she swiped her eyes and bit her lip hoping his decision was easier for him.
When Wrath felt Rhaine's hand on his forearm he jumped. Instantly regretting not paying attention to his surroundings. She wanted to leave? She was not leaving. She just got her. He stood up and turned, grabbing Rhaine's shoulders and pulling her into his chest, petting her hair. "You're not leaving this house. If anyone leaves, I do, to get my shit together. I just don't understand how you enjoy being in this prison of a room. All that paperwork, stupid emails, fucking problems..."
He sighed and felt terrible. "I'm sorry I've been distant. Beth and I's problems are not yours and I hope you don't feel like they are. I'm trying to keep them separate the best I can, but I'm new at this whole family thing..."
Rhaine's eyes closed, and she once again took a big breath in. His smell, it was a mixture of whatever he liked to wear and his bonding scent, faint of course. She took in the smell again and again then looked up at him. She loved having a Father. She didn't have one growing up and when she was around him she felt like a pre-teen or a teenager just learning how to enjoy her own life along with him there. Truth was she transitioned so quickly after meeting him, it almost felt like a whole new life.
"I don't mind being in here, I know it sounds strange but I love the sound of the fire. I love the warmth of the room, and I love knowing that instead of you throwing papers every once in a while I take some of the stress off of you. I do think you and Beth need to get out of here tonight. I can happily type out all the responses and send them. Hell if you really want I can just deny all the glymera's money requests. Really cause a stir." Rhaine giggled and tucked her head against Wrath's chest hoping she was making him smile inside.
Wrath let out a big laugh, dropped his hands from Rhaine's shoulders. "Oh fuck, you are so my daughter."
He grinned and turned walking over to his fathers desk. He sat in the big chair and felt around for his pen. "First, help me sign those damn papers for Mary & Rhage. We're going to bring another baby into this house, and I can't believe I'm allowing it. Fucking-er, damn babies."
Wrath made a mental note to watch his language around Rhaine. A father shouldn't swear in front of his children, let alone get angry and he'd done plenty of both recently. Why was this fathering shit so hard?
Rhaine grinned, coming around and giving Wrath his pen. "Yeah, fucking babies." Chuckling softly, she nudged his shoulder before getting the documents for the adoption putting them in front of him. Easing his hand to the right spot, she put her hand down flat horizontally, so he could sign his name straight without feeling like she was helping him do it. Just keeping him in line basically.
"By the way, are you up for possibly helping me with something?" Rhaine reached over with her free hand and clicked around until she got deeper into Wrath's emails to know where to start. "I want to learn how to fight better, and I think you'd be the best instructor. Sight or no sight you scare people and I want that."
Wrath grinned as Rhaine repeated fucking babies. Sometimes, she wasn't so bad to be around, but she was full grown. He couldn't take care of a baby, let alone hold one. Wrath quickly signed his signature, trying to stay on the line without running into Rhaine's hand, but failed. He grumbled to himself and let the pen fall out of his hand when he was done. He took the paper and folded it up, grabbing an envelope from it's spot where he kept all the envelopes on his desk. Wrath opened up a drawer on the opposite side as his daughter was at. His wax kit was already set up. He picked up his stamp and block of wax and set it down next to the envelope. He'd done this so many times he no longer needed any help. Wrath lit a match and let the wax melt over the envelope. With a quick blow the match was out, and in the bucket by his feet. Wrath quickly felt the bottom of the stamp to make sure it was in the correct position before sealing the wax. He gently put everything back and sighed, hearing Rhaine's words.
She wanted to fight again. That was even worse then being locked up in here. He couldn't even imagine her out with the brothers fighting, let alone on her own. She was his daughter, and needed to stay protected. Wrath lifted his hands and rubbed his eyes under his wrap arounds. He growled deep. "Rhaine, we've talked about this. I don't want to even think about you out there. If anything happened to you, you have no idea what I would do. I have no idea what I would do. The brotherhood... no one would be able to stop me from going on a rampage..."
He put his wrap arounds on his desk and looked at Rhaine. He knew she was standing there from her scent. He opened his eyes, shinning bright, but useless. "I enjoy hearing that you think I am the best, and that I scare people... but I don't... I can't have you out there. If I were to ever hear of you hurt. Baby, I don't know what I would do."
Wrath reached up and touched her face. He wished he knew what she looked like. He imagined that she looked like her mother. Long red hair, thing taught body, slender but curvy. He hoped she didn't look anything like him. He dropped his hand from her soft cheek and picked up his glasses, slipping them back over his eyes. "I need to find a suitable male for you anyway. That will keep you busy."
He turned and faced the front of his desk. What kind of male would she even like? "Um, what do you like in a male?"
Looking down, Rhaine felt her heart sink. "It wasn't to go out fighting." Walking around, Rhaine sat in her seat and picked up her mug taking a sip of it. "I just wanted to be able to say I was as deadly as the man who created me. My Mom, come on you remember how prissy she is. Hell, Daddy her name is fucking 'Phrecious' it drives me nuts." Taking another sip she shook her head. "I want to fight but I know there's too many risks. Believe me Vishous pounded that deep into my skull already. I just want to know what you do that's all. Plus now that you and Payne aren't fighting maybe it would help with easing some of your stress to teach me. I could always spar with someone else so you don't have to worry about hurting me."
Getting up once more, Rhaine picked up a bunch of documents from another side of the table, and eased herself over George to the filing cabinet. She tugged out the first door and started filing away by vampire last names. "It's either that or I start learning how to cook, and you'll end up hearing from Fritz how he can't get to the oven anymore." Grinning, Rhaine couldn't hide her own laughter at her ultimatum. Yes, because Fritz would SO put up an angry face if she baked, but he wouldn't say too much.
Wrath sighed. "Well, I guess you could train. It would be like going to the gym, but never fighting... out with the lessers. You would be able to protect yourself of course then, if you were to come in contact with them..."
Wrath really didn't even want to think about this. He noticed her aversion to the male question. He smirked. "I'll talk to Tohr about it and see. I mean, I don't know if you'll want to with him, but I trust him."
Smirking, Rhaine kept filing then paused and thought carefully. "Truthfully?" She paused realizing she would be revealing a lot of herself within the next few moments, "Someone just like Vishous I guess. In a way...but kinder." Sighing, she turned and settled her ass down in a chair. "But I can't really tell you what I like. From what I hear I could say I want someone like Brad Pitt and it won't matter. When you meet your mate, you know. Right? You knew when you met Beth instantly that she was the one. I do believe it was the same on her end, so if that's the case...I could say 'I want someone just like my Daddy!' and end up with someone like...well...Rehvenge." Laughing softly, Rhaine stood up again to keep filing.
"I do want someone who will protect me. I don't want some skinny rich runt." Rhaine paused her fingers, then blinked and smirked. "I think I'm starting to sound just like you."
Wrath looked up at her face, his voice deep. "No Sympaths."
He laughed and sighed loudly. "Well I want someone who can protect you too. They'll have to go through me, which will be quite.... interesting. A bit fun too on my behalf."
He suddenly felt very protective thinking about someone getting close to his daughter. His bonding scent filled the air and he growled territorially. "I think we need to change the subject. I don't like thinking about this. What else do I need to do around here?"
Pausing her hand, Rhaine lifted her head and smelled the air. This was quite possibly the most amazing moment in her life, for the first time in forever she actually...seemed to be cared about by one of her parents. Her mom was always gone screwing anything with something between his legs, then she'd pop back around when the relationship ended just to cut Rhaine down on her life then disappear again. Turning around, Rhaine walked over and leaned onto Wrath's side, hugging him around the neck. She laid her head sideways on his shoulder. She wanted to cry, and yet she also wanted to feel like a kindergartner and jump around for joy. Instead she just took in the moment, before leaning up kissing his cheek and going back to the filing cabinet. Making it a point not to point out the King was being a sweet pansy was probably a good idea.
"Well, you could decide on whether or not people get vacations or not. I believe the council wants to use about $175,000 in business funds for their many different trips across the state." Shaking her head, Rhaine closed the cabinet and came back to her spot. "Or you could just sit back and throw the ball for George he's looking at you begging right now for attention."
